How Can You HELP?

We have partnered with the producers of the documentary, “Sons of Perdition”. It is the story of polygamy’s exiled youth. This film was featured on Oprah Winfrey’s Documentary Club. We are encouraging those that want to help, to hold a movie night, showing the film to help bring awareness to this cause. Our goal is not only to raise awareness, but also to raise funds and inspire those that attend to hold their own showing of the film, and so on, spreading the word. You will have the opportunity to follow the progress through our website at www.holdingouthelp.org.

Holding Out HELP is a 501(C) 3 non-profit organization that began 3 years ago when a Utah couple offered their home as a safe house to a family of six who desired to leave their polygamist lifestyle. They could never have imagined how many more individuals and families were in desperate need of similar support. They watched this terrified family, uncertain about their future and the world outside their polygamist community, become confident and self-sufficient. The couple learned there is a pressing need to provide individuals and families transitioning out of the community, with shelter, food, counseling, mentoring, vocational support, and education. They were compelled to spearhead an effort they call Holding Out HELP (Helping, Encouraging and Loving Polygamists).

The cost is $25 for the movie/fundraising packet. It will guide you through the steps to an effective evening. The packet includes the DVD, brochure on HOH, FAQ sheets on HOH and polygamy, and the invitations. Contact information is also provided if you needed to speak to a representative from HOH. In addition, there is opportunity to hire the boys in the movie, the producers, or an HOH representative, to speak, or have a Skype conversation with your group. Elissa Wall, who wrote “Stolen Innocence”, is also available for a limited number of speaking engagements.

Sons of Perdition follows three boys after they leave Colorado City.  With limited educations and rarely a stable address, the obstacles are enormous.  All the boys have big dreams—starting with the hope of attending high school—but what they want most is contact with their families. For one teen in the film, this means numerous attempts to help his fourteen-year-old sister escape before an arranged marriage.

With unprecedented access, Sons of Perdition takes audiences on a three-year-journey into the lives of these remarkable teens, providing the inside analysis to make this intimate portrait a big story—a timely, critical look at faith, family and religious exile in mainstream America.

Sons of Perdition has partnered with Holding Out Help, a Utah based non-profit organization, to continue the efforts the film began: to bring awareness and support to those who have made the difficult decision to leave polygamy.

The women and children that leave the FLDS, or other polygamist communities, face a unique set of challenges. They need basic material itemshousing, food, clothing, employment, phones and computers to get them set up in the mainstream world. But they also need work and life skills, and often, psychological counseling.

We have chosen to work with Holding Out Help because they are a hands-on organization that works with the community to provide individualized care, housing, and other resources to this special population of exiles. Most importantly, they offer hope of a new beginning, and the real skills and supplies that are needed to start a new life.
